Pimpinella anisum

Anise is a Mediterranean spice that, in the West, is used mainly to flavor confectionery. In its native countries it is an important flavoring for alcoholic drinks like raki, ouzo and pernod. Traditionally it is used to treat coughs.    

Important Phytochemicals 

Antioxidants: Caffeic acid, camphene, chlorogenic acid, eugenol, myristicin, rutin.
Others: Bergapten, limonene,pinenes, terpinols.   

Medicinal Properties 

Anise contains limonene which is known to have an inhibitory effect against a number of cancers and eugenol which inhibits platelet aggregation.
